Shopify checkout: live rates and duties/taxes at checkout

    In short

Live Teleship rates at checkout need Shopify's third-party carrier-calculated shipping, included on Grow (annual billing), Advanced and Plus. On Basic you set a fixed rate and collect duties with Shopify's own tool; you still ship DDP with Teleship.

    A. Shopify Plan: Grow (annual billing) / Advanced / Plus — live rates

    1. Complete Part 6 of the app settings (Set up the Shopify app in 20 minutes — step by step) first.
    2. Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery → Shipping → Manage (your general profile) → Shipping zones. Make sure a zone exists for each country group you ship to with Teleship (EU27, United States, Canada, Australia…). If a country is in no zone, it can't check out.
    3. In each zone → Add rate → Use carrier or app to calculate rates → Teleship (Rates provided by app).
    4. Tick the services to offer. In Shopify's picker they appear as International Shipping (local import duties/taxes applied), optionally Free International Shipping (…) if you set a free-shipping threshold in the app, and Future services so new services appear automatically. DHL Express Worldwide and DHL Economy Select can be offered at checkout the same way; at checkout the customer sees the service names from Where we ship and which service goes where (e.g. "Teleship Standard Tracked (Duties prepaid)", "DHL Express Worldwide (Duties Prepaid)").
    5. Do not add handling fees or mark-ups here. Configure them in the Teleship app (Part 6) so they apply consistently and don't double up.
    6. Settings → Taxes and duties: enable Charge tax on shipping rates — shipping is part of the VAT base in the EU, so without this you under-collect and pay the difference at label time.
    7. Also under Taxes and duties → Duties and import taxes: if your Teleship rate includes duties and taxes (the app default), keep Shopify's own duties collection off for those markets, otherwise they are collected twice. If you prefer Shopify to collect duties, switch the option off in the app's checkout settings and enable it in Shopify — one or the other, never both.
    8. Test: open your storefront, add a real product, enter a full address in a Teleship destination (street, postcode, phone), and check that a Teleship rate and a duties/taxes line appear. Compare with the quote in the app for the same product.

Common reasons a Teleship rate does not appear: the product has no weight or no HS code/origin (see Product data: HS codes, country of origin, weights, dimensions); the destination isn't in a zone with the Teleship rate; the basket exceeds the route value limit (Value, size, and weight limits by service); the product is restricted (Restricted items: liquids, batteries, food, cosmetics, CPSC/FDA); the address is incomplete; the plan does not include carrier-calculated rates. Changing your browser's country does not simulate a checkout — enter the actual address.

Price looks too high at checkout? Check, in this order: handling fee/offset in the app; the package assigned to the product (dimensions drive billable weight — Packaging configuration and how billable weight works); tax on shipping; whether duties are being collected twice.

    B. Shopify Plan: Basic / Grow (monthly billing) — fixed rate + Shopify duties tool

    1. Create a Market for each destination group and a shipping zone with a flat rate (use the app's quote for a typical order as a guide; see Pricing, fees, and how you pay).
    2. Settings → Taxes and duties → Duties and import taxes: enable collection for those countries. Shopify calculates duties from the product's HS code and country of origin — so Product data: HS codes, country of origin, weights, dimensions is not optional.
    3. Ship each order from the Teleship app as usual. The label price includes the real duties and taxes; the amount Shopify collected is yours to offset it. Add a small buffer to your flat rate if you see a gap.
