US import duties: how they stack, what changed on 24 July 2026, HTS10 errors

    In short

The US has no duty-free threshold any more (the $800 de minimis ended in August 2025). Duties stack: MFN base rate by HTS code + Section 301 (country-specific, since 24 July 2026 applied to ~60 countries including the UK, EU and China at 10–12.5 % or more) + Section 232 on steel/aluminium/autos content + anti-dumping/countervailing duties where applicable. Teleship computes the full stack at checkout from the product's US-specific 10-digit HTS code and country of origin.

What changed on 24 July 2026

    • The temporary Section 122 10 % surcharge expired and was replaced by Section 301 duties by country of origin (10–12.5 % for most; higher for China/HK).
    • Postal parcels (USPS Postal DDP) moved from the flat surcharge to the full duty stack — the same as commercial clearance. Merchants who assumed "flat 10 %" saw variable rates overnight.
    • Impact on Teleship DDP Tracked (commercial clearance) is limited; impact on Postal DDP is larger.

Why an order errored with "US HTS10": the product has no valid 10-digit US code, so the stack can't be computed. Classify it for the US in Products (Product data: HS codes, country of origin, weights, dimensions) and retry.

    Worked example: consumer electronics, made in China: MFN 0 % + Section 301 25 % + (post-July) no 122 ≈ 25 % of the goods value; made in the UK: MFN 0 % + Section 301 10 % ≈ 10 %.

State sales tax is separate from import duty and is yours to handle once you exceed a state's economic-nexus thresholds; Teleship collects and remits import duties only.

Changes happen overnight and apply immediately to labels bought after the effective time. If we ever under-collect because of a rule change we didn't have, we cover the difference — but classify with US HTS10 codes so we can compute correctly.
